Winter Switzerland – sledding with children
Winter Switzerland is in fact winter wonderland with its mountains, snow, and spectacular views! The abundance and variety of Swiss sled runs is truly stunning 🧡 I have to admit that I myself was unaware of the complex infrastructure aimed at children that Switzerland has to offer. The sled runs there are long, well-maintained, and picturesque. Here are just three out of the many excellent options for a sled trip with kids 😊
Zermatt
This town is crème de la crème of Switzerland, the symbol of the Swiss Alps. The 1.5 km long Rotenboden sled on Gornergrat is both the longest and the most spectacular Swiss sled run. The sun and snowy mountain tops – a view straight from postcards – are truly breath-taking, and definitely worth seeing with your own eyes. It’s a pity that you go downhill so quickly! Fortunately, you can get straight back up by train, admiring the beautiful panorama of the Pennine Alps with their famous Matterhorn on the way.
Melchsee-Frutt
A sled run that is eight kilometers long…? It almost sounds too good to be true! Located near the idyllic village by lake Melchsee, it is ideal for both children and grown-ups. Its top lies almost a kilometer above its bottom, making it the longest sled run in central Switzerland. Moreover, it is also accessible (and safe!) at night thanks to beautiful illuminations. The winter forest around it creates a magical atmosphere. Melchsee-Frutt guarantees red cheeks (with cold and excitement) and muscle sores ;)
Engelberg
The famous ski jump is not the only regional attraction. Children can choose from as many as four different sled runs – nine kilometers in total! The variety of runs and landscapes will keep you entertained for hours on. Additionally, there is a snow park near lake Trübsee, which offers snow tubes even to the youngest snow lovers. After all the fun with kids, in the evening parents can relax sipping mulled wine and enjoying fondue 🧡 This is the place to be if you want to experience the magic of winter first hand!
As a child, all I could hope for in terms of winter entertainment was a tiny makeshift sled run outside my apartment block – a very modest experience indeed compared to the amazing adventures, joy, and winter carefreeness Switzerland offers to the youngest tourists 😉 However, there is a downside… having experienced all those wonders, it’s really hard to get back to your cozy, small backyard 😉
